Cancer refers to a class of diseases that is characterised by the growth of abnormal cells which invade and crowd out the body’s healthy cells.
Surviving cancer is similar to returning from a battlefield. The scars are there, the body is weak, and there is a new chapter in life to face. The trend in recent times records 12.7 million cases of new cancer diagnosed every year with 7.6 million people succumbing to it. The cumulative figures of the survivors add up and it has become increasingly necessary to focus attention on a cancer survivor’s life after undergoing treatment.
Conventional Cancer Treatments
Treatment protocols for cancer have tended to focus on the so-called conventional methods. These are Chemotherapy, Radiation Therapy and Surgery. These treatments, especially the first two, are notorious for their aggressive side effects. Indeed a patient is usually left battling the ravages of the disease as well as the toxic side effects of the treatment. The post-treatment care for such a patient would of necessity be as extensive as the treatment protocol itself.
Integrative and Alternative Cancer Treatments
Integrative Cancer Treatments use less invasive therapies to treat cancer. The patient who chooses to take this route of alternative medicine will consequently have far fewer after-effects to worry about. With its reliance on holistic methods to counter the disease the patient’s turnaround is smoother as the body will not be overtaxed in ridding itself of unwanted toxins.
A cancer survivor has a number of ways in which he or she can handle life after cancer treatment. The transition from a life of hospitals and drugs provides enormous relief but it can, at the same time, be disorienting. From a fully-dependent phase one is abruptly thrown back into society where they are expected to cope by themselves.
The first line of support must come from the patient’s family, friends and professional colleagues. Fitting back in is not always easy but with the support that this group provides one can ease back into a ‘normal’ life without too much fuss. Of equal importance is the post-cancer care that the medical facility and the doctors who treated the cancer patient provide. Any facility worth the name will make scheduled follow-up checkups and progress reports for all patients that they handle. For practical purposes having one’s personal physician to note any changes in the body is a good idea. Support groups for cancer survivors provide an excellent forum for patients who have shared a common experience to exchange ideas and are an important part of any post-treatment care.
